Da Hong Pao: The King of Rock Tea

Da Hong Pao (大红袍, Big Red Robe) is the most celebrated of all Yancha (rock teas) from Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province. This legendary oolong tea grows on steep cliffs where tea bushes cling to rocky crevices, absorbing minerals from the stone. The result is a tea with a unique “rock rhyme” (yan yun) — a mineral depth found nowhere else.

"Da Hong Pao is not just tea — it is geology in a cup. The rock, the mist, and the craft converge in every infusion."

The Legend of Da Hong Pao

According to legend, during the Ming Dynasty, a scholar was traveling to Beijing for the imperial examination when he fell gravely ill in Wuyi Mountain. A monk gave him tea from the cliffside bushes, and the scholar miraculously recovered. He went on to pass the exam and became a high official. Returning to thank the monk, he draped his red official’s robe over the tea bushes — hence the name “Big Red Robe.”

Brewing Tip for Da Hong Pao

Use a gaiwan or small clay teapot with 5g of tea and 120ml water at 95°C. The first infusion should be a quick 5-second rinse. Start with 10-second infusions and gradually increase. A quality Da Hong Pao should yield 8-12 infusions with evolving flavor profiles.
