- EGC (Epigallocatechin) - Second most abundant catechin. Also has significant antioxidant activity.

- EC (Epicatechin) - The simplest catechin, also found in chocolate and apples.
2. Theaflavins and Thearubigins
These are the primary antioxidants in black tea. During black tea's oxidation process, catechins are converted into theaflavins and thearubigins:
- Theaflavins - Give black tea its bright color and brisk taste. Have significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Thearubigins - More complex compounds that give black tea its depth and body. Make up about 60% of the solids in black tea.
While black tea has different antioxidants than green tea, it's still very healthy - the total antioxidant capacity is similar.
3. Other Polyphenols
- Flavonols - Including quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin. These are also found in fruits and vegetables and have anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Phenolic acids - Including gallic acid and chlorogenic acid.
4. L-theanine
While not technically an antioxidant, L-theanine is an important amino acid in tea that has calming effects and works synergistically with caffeine.
