Green Tea Origin

Latitude, elevation and cultivar explain most of why two green teas from the same country taste nothing alike. How to tell which one is driving the cup.

Height slows the leaf down and changes what ends up in the cup. Where high gardens really are, and why a high-grown label on its own proves very little.

A geographical indication fixes a boundary and a method. It does not fix grade, freshness or honesty. What these labels cover and what they leave open.

Five regions set the standard for Chinese green tea. What each one grows, why it sits where it does, and how to read a label that names one.

The line between a core green tea region and the surrounding area is a document, not a flavour. What you gain, what you lose, and when the premium is worth it.

Green tea began in China and spread to Japan and beyond. The main growing regions, their terroir, and what each climate gives the cup.
